Summer Training

It is already summer but I still can't get the feeling of my summer vacation. Almost everyday I have to attend my training together with the Adamson Chess Varsity. For weeks now I am not able to get home and go swimming. I should be spending my vacation back home but even now I can’t even spend weekends in our house in Malabon. That is because of my busy schedule especially this summer where chess tournaments are being held from town to town. I even missed the Active Chess Tournament in our covered court at Barangay Tonsuya, Malabon City. Though it was held on a weekend it coincides with the tournament I attended at the Ateneo de Manila University. I maybe the youngest player there and my friends, neighbors and cousins should have seen me play. I had some games with some of the chess players in our barangay. Last year, I remember playing with some of the teenagers in our street (Judge Oreta St). Oftentimes I loose since I am still learning. But now I may say, they are no match now. They don’t even know yet that I am going to Vietnam this June to represent our country, our town, and our little barangay. As my parent always remind me, be a humble achiever and show respect to those who have helped me got to where I am now (and in the future).

Daryl Unix - 2nd place 10-UB National Agre Group

Thanks God! It is over. And Thanks God & Mama Mary for the answered prayers for all my hard work paid-off.

My last two days of tourney been very well. On the fourth day, I scored 1.5.
Round 5 - A draw with Elijah Maliam – rate 1732. Round 6 -Won the game against Carlo Caranyagan – rate 1958 on board 3. On the last day, round 7 started past 2pm. I am up again at board 3 playing against Tristan Frech Ibaoc – rate 1712. Everybody in the family was so tense. I know my parents are praying so hard. Even my team mates are watching closely. And finally I made it! I won that last round. I scored 5.5 out of 7 games. Although I know I will land on the top three my prayers didn’t stop. I thank Him and Mary for all the guidance. I even wish for a bonus… that I place 2nd. I was waiting for whose name to be mentioned first, and it was Maliam. Oh how happy we are. So much for the graces I placed 2nd and will also be going to Vietnam to represent the Philippines.

Well, think again Daryl, it’s not yet over. It is just beginning. Still have Vietnam to prepare to, and who knows, the World chess tournament.

NCFP Age Group Update (April 3, 2008 - Day 3)

It was me vs Paulo Bersamina (rate 1853) yesterday on board 1 for the Under 10 age group. Unluckily, i was 1 pawn down on the middle game and didn't able to have it tied and finally loose that game 4. As of now, I got 3 wins and 1 lose. I already beated rated players on this event. I won my first three games with the following players: (game 1) Paul Joseph Alcodia, (game 2) Juan Carlos Presente -rate 1796, (game 3) Lanz Renuel Otero -rate 1799. How happy would I be if I was able to beat Bersamina, but it would be very frustrating on their side if that happened. All eyes were already on us since we are the one left on the playing area. Pressured and not so fully prepared for the game maybe the cause of my defeat. My preparation was only 5 days. Unexpected things happened. As the songs says, only 'Heaven Knows', what's been stored for me. Maybe in His Time. But still full of hope to win all games on the next two more days.

Recognition Day

I got a gold medal for (grade2 to grade 4) Math quiz and silver for Computer Quiz. My sister got a silver for the Math quiz during our school's Academic Olympiad.
Posing with our principal Mrs. Aguilar, my adviser Ms. Lasaca, my teachers Mrs. Melanio, Mrs. Dagohoy and Mrs. Matutina (her husband is somehow related to my mother the Delos Reyes - Solidum clan of Ibajay, Aklan) after our recognition day. I am the first honor in our class with an average score of 92.88.

Schooling is over and we, and the brightest among the class are marching toward the center stage to receive our medals. My parents were really delighted as I received my medals being the first honor in our class. I also got the most punctual and the loyal kab scout award.
Before our school closes, Republic Institute celebrated its 46th foundation day. I am one of the representative for our section for the Grade 2 to Grace 4 Math Quiz and Computer Quiz. I got the gold on the Math Academic Olympiad and silver on the Computer quiz. My sister Dindin got a silver on the Math quiz for Grade Kinder and Grade 1. My sister also is a first honor student in their class, most punctual and most cooperative as well.
We should not forget to study well. If we can be good at chess we can be an excellent student also in school.

Dr. Jose P. Leviste Sr. Inter-University Chess Festival

I started at board 22 and ended up at board 4 on round 7. I scored 5 out of 7. Won 4 games, 2 draws and lose 1. On the Grade School Division overall I placed 6th. Just a half point away to be on the top 5 players. There are 59 players on the elementary division and it was an inter-university tournament. I could happily settle for a bronze. And why not? Other players had their school coaches and me I am playing alone representing my school, Republic Institute. I could have been so proud if I was able to win my last round with Alcon Paul Datu. But I got time trouble and have to offer a draw. I should fall as 2nd or 3rd if I won my last game. I’ve always been placed always at the cut-off. There were special awards, Top kinder, Top Grade 1 and Top Grade 2... and me? I am in Grade 3. Just a half point away to be on the top 5 players who were given awards and prizes.
My congratulations to my kuya Ali Guya of Adamson University, for topping the high school division. I envy that trophy!!! (I will have one, like that too!)And to kuya Ramie Lord Guerra of Adamson University who finished fourth on the college division. I got to meet kuya Haridas Pascua on that event. He is very nice. Hope I will be like him someday and we can play chess out of the country together.
(My opponents and game result on this game were: Nathan Gahu (win), Dennis Gutierrez Jr (win), Nyek Cual (win), Jerome Lumacad (win), Christian Nanola (draw), Malcom Kwok (loss),
Alcon Paul Datu (draw)).
