17th Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship

7-leg Shell Active Chess competition kicks off June 20

The future stars of RP chess take center stage beginning June 20 as the Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship (Shell Active Chess), the nation's longest running, grassroots-based chess competition, unveils its 2009 season with a promise of another spirited nationwide battle for top honours in two age divisions.

The seven-leg circuit, spread over key cities in the country, features the Juniors division, for players 20-year-old and under, and the Kiddies division, for players 14-and-under, with the top finishers gaining berths in the national finals slated in October.

To kick off this year’s theme “Maglaro at Matuto, Kasama ang Chess Barkada!” Pilipinas Shell, in partnership with the Department of Education, held the first ever “An Interaction with the Masters” or AIM where over 100 students teachers, coaches, principals and parents from various public elementary and high schools in Metro Manila took part in the two-day chess clinic conducted by the country’s top chess masters, headed by Grand Master (GM) Eugene Torre. Torre, together with fellow GMs Jayson Gonzales and Darwin Daylo, one of the products of Shell Active Chess, along with International Masters Idel Datu and Ronald Dableo, and International Arbiter Rolly Yutuc shared their expertise on the fundamentals, techniques and advanced strategies of the game.

This year’s Shell Active Chess circuit will start on June 20-21 for the NCR leg at SM Mall of Asia. See you there!

Proud to be a Filipino Kiddie Chess Player

It was only last tuesday that we congratulated (thru text)Tita Laarni, the proud mother of Stephen 'PenPen' Rome Pangilinan, for his son`s triump at the recently concluded GM Susan Polgar Chess Tournament. My mother and tita had 'chica-chica' thru texts. And when Stephen got a spot at ABS-CBN TV Patrol my mom hurriedly texted tita Laarni. It was such a delight to watch another kiddie chess player from the Philippines had that success in a foreign land.

Me, Mayor Libunao and Stephen during the 2nd Mayor Libunao Cup where we both are Champion in our category, 10-under and 8-under.

10th Asean+ Age Group Chess Championship

Goodluck to my co-kiddie chess players who are now in Vietnam and representatives to the 10th Asean+ Age Group Chess Championship. Try very hard to gain a medal, I believe we are much talented and better than them. Truly! I been there last year. I ranked 5th in the Rapid 1o-under category, and actually the top 4 are all Vietnamese because at the last round they just been paired together. It will be an individual and a country competition, not a team as if there will be Team A, Team B, for each country. If total TEAM POINTS to be summed up will be equivalent to the points of the top 3 players of each category per country (just like last year), what do you think will happen if we only have 2 players on each category? Last year, in my category I go home with 2 silver medals and 1 bronze, for the Rapid, Blitz and Standard categories respectively.

Hope you harvest more Individual and Team medals. Good luck and prayers to my gallant chess kiddie players and friends, Dennis Gutierrez Jr (8-under), Paulo Bersamina(12-under), Vince Angelo Medina (14-under), Samanta Glo Revita and, Marie Antoinette San Diego (Girls 10-under), Bernadette Galas (Girls 14-under) and to the representatives of my category 10-under, Daniel John Lemi, Tristan Frech Ibaoc and Rhenzi Kyle Sevillano. Gather that points and bring home the bacon... with the medals of course!

Tito Cesar and Emrick

Emrick Palmero, 3rd Placer, 8 under category - 2009 National Age Group Chess Championship. His very first time to join a national event. He`s been playing and joining chess tournaments for barely a year. See, there is nothing impossible, if you really wanted it, plus the love to the sport. And maybe you are destined to have this one. You may brag your trophy as you join chess clubs in the States and a very nice 'pasalubong' to your mom. But of course, everything became possible also because he got a very supportive father, tito Cesar. A big big hug also from me to your dad, he`s also very supportive of me, specially consoling me when I lose a game... = )

Serious and funny moments. (2009 Natl Age Group at Cabagnot Training, Aklan)

Find and play with Chad Moody there in the U.S. ..hehehe!
I know you are so happy with your new place especially you are with your mom again. We wish you and your family well and hope our paths will cross again and we will play again our favorite game, Chess, Chess, Cheers!!!

Brgy 756 Open Chess Challenge

Lourecel took the champion prize of P 3,000 plus the elegant trophy donated by Cong. Bagatsing while the 2nd-3rd placers Alwin Sopungco, Dr. Bong Perez and Jon Ira Dela Cruz shared equally their cash prizes but the trophies went to the 2nd and 3rd standing respectively. In the Special Category prizes the winners are; Top Senior-Cecil "unbeatable" Padua P 500.00 + Medal, Top Kiddy-Jean Paula Dela Cruz & Daryl Unix Samantila, P 500.00 + Medal and Top Lady-Jon Ira Dela Cruz & Glady's Romero, P 500.00 + Medal. All of them receive the copy of NAPCA's Pinoy Chess Magazine. All participants got their Round by Round Cash Incentive Scheme 10-5 NOBODY LOSE! EVERYBODY WINS!

Daryl (it`s me!) lead the players 'Oath of Sportmanship'.

Ceremonial move by Brg 756 Chairwoman Norberta P. Asuncion and US Sensational Chess Prodigy Chad Moody.

I didn`t had the chance to play a game with this FilAm chess prodigy. They said they were in a hurry to meet Wesley So. It could have been a nice game since we both belong to the 10-under category.

And The Winners Are!

That includes me for the Top Kiddie, 14-under category.

The Second placers. Also in right most photo is sir NA Salvador “Boyet” Tardecilla.

The first placer, Kuya Lourecel.
Another well organized event by National Association of Philippine Chess Arbiters (NAPCA).
