PACE GRANDFINALS WINNERS

Thirteen year-old Jerad Docena outclassed Vince Angelo Medina in the final round to clinch the 1st Philippine Academy for Chess Excellence (PACE) Kiddies chess championship held recently at the PACE headquarters, 56 Mindanao Avenue, Project 6 in Quezon City.

The second seed Docena, a student of FEU-Fern, bounced back from an earlier loss in the second round to score six wins and a draw for a total score of 7.5 points in the 9-round Swiss system grand finals of the event organized by PACE and sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP).

Daryl Unix Samantila,  a mainstay of Adamson University high school chess team, (correction please, Daryl is only 11-year old Grade 6 student of Adamson Universitry and not yet eligible to join  ADU Junior UAAP team)  also scored 7.5 points with a victory over erstwhile co-leader Aldous Roy Coronel in the other featured final round match to finish in a tie with Docena, but the latter won the title with a higher tie-break points. They, however, split the top cash prizes at stake and received P12,500 each.

Pre-tournament favorite McDominique Lagula and WFM Cherry Ann Mejia, tied for third and fourth spots with seven points apiece and went home with P5,500 each. Lagula was adjudged as the third placer after the tie-break.

Coronel, tied with Kristian Paulo Cristobal with 6.5 points, settled for fifth and sixth places, respectively and received P2,000 each.

Rounding up the top ten finishers with six points each were Avhix Alfonso, Medina, Virgen Gil Ruaya and John Eric Margarito, who were awarded with P750 each.
Asia’s first grandmaster and also a member of the RP chess team that won a silver medal in the recently concluded Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, Eugene Torre and PACE founding president GM Gonzales handed out the prizes and awards to the winners in a fitting closing ceremony last Sunday, November 28.

The following age-category winners were also given P1,000 cash prize and medal each: Giovanni Mejia (14 & below-Boys); Janelle Mae Frayna (14 & below-Girls); Fernando Mendoza (12 & below-Boys); Shania Mae Mendoza (12 & below-Girls); Stephen Rome Pangilinan (10 & below-Boys); and Alexis Anne Osena (10 & below-Girls).  By I.A. DOCENA AT SAMANTILA KAMPEON SA GRAND FINALS PACE KIDDIES

Nov. 27-28 PACE Grandfinals.  An awesome winning.  The youngest among the leg champions and trailing behind me are the junior varsity chess players of FEU, La Salle and San Beda.
I Scored 7.5 out of 9 rounds and declared 1st runner-up in the PACE Grandfinals (Under-16 Category). Jerad Docena also scored 7.5 but judged as The Champion because of higher tie-break. Thanks to GM Eugene Torre, GM Jayson Gonzales, Mr. Boyet Tardecilla, Mr. Gene Policarpio and people involved in organizing this event. Finalist from Tugegarao also joined this event and of course the best players in NCR. Cut-off age for this event is 16-Under and i`m so happy I already placed 2nd at my age of 11. To God be the Glory!
With GM Eugene Torre fresh from the 2010 Asian Games held in Guangzhou, China where Philippine Team got a Silver Medal.

Palarong Maynila Elimination

Nov. 22 to 24, 2010.   Thumps up from my father! A perfect 5.0 score to secure the Gold Medal for the Boys Elementary Individual category  and another silver medal for the team category with teammate, Charles Rodriguez from the recently concluded Palarong Maynila Elimination held from November 22 to 24, 10 at Manila Science High School Taft Ave. cor. Padre Faura St. Ermita City of Manila, Metro Manila, Philippines.

I was at the chapel and in the middle of the seminar together with some classmates and schoolmates who will be receiving our Catholic`s sacrament of Confirmation coming Thursday when my teacher called me.  My father is waiting outside because our team will be heading already to Manila Science for the Palarong Maynila.  And so me together with my teammate Charles Rodriguez in the Boys Elementary, Karen Enriquez and Crissa Canada in the Girls High School, Timothy So Kua and Jusmel Fronda in the High School Boys Division and our coach Mr, Christopher Rodriguez went to Manila Science, the venue of this year`s Palarong Maynila.

At last, my first Palaro event! I won the Gold in the Individual and Silver for team with Charles.  Timothy got the Gold for the Boys HS Individual and Gold for team with Jusmel and Bronze for Karen and another Bronze for team for Crissa.  Congratulations to Baby Falcons and Ninong Coach Chris Rodriguez!
