Grandmaster (GM) Wesley So beat FM Julius Joseph de Ramos in 28 moves of a French Defense in the sixth and final match and ruled the premier section of the Young Knights League held recently at Eton Cyberpod Corinthian, EDSA cor Ortigas Ave., Pasig City.
So scored a perfect score of six points after six rounds of play and brought home the P20,000 top prize and the champion trophy in this annual event organized by Metropolitan Chess Club exclusively for those who have joined the Milo Checkmate program since 1990.
During the opening, So made an inspirational talk stating that the Milo Checkmate program was his starting point and through hardwork and perseverance brought him at his present status. So attended the Milo Checkmate program last 2001 and after nine years attained the super GM status. A feat that is phenomenal according to founding head two time former olympian player WNM Mila Emperado.
Following So in the final standings were second and third placers GM Ronald Dableo and NM Leo Carlos with 5.0 points apiece; 4th-6th places were FM Emmanuel Garcia, Mari Joseph Turqueza and NM Jake dela Cruz with 4.0 points each; 7th-8th were Samson Lim and NM Emmanuel Emperado, 3.5 points; 9th-15th places were FM Julius de Ramos, Vic Neil Villanueva, Timothy John So Kua. Miguel Lahoz, kristain Paulo Cristobal, Claudio Olar, Angelo Ray Macaraig and 16th-21st were Jan Nigel Galan, Christian Flores, Mark Nazario, Gabriel Layugan, Alfonso Ramos and Eugene de Ramos.
In the Intermediate and Beginner Section, Ynna Sophia Canape and Daryl Samantila shared the top honors with 5.5 points each. They shared the pooled cash prizes in the first and second places but Canape brought home the champion trophy due to better tie break Canape.
Solo third with 5.0 points was Malcolm Kwok followed by Judino Tadeo Macayan and Normel de Jesus in 4th-5th places with 4.5 points. In 6th-14th places with 4.0 points each were Stella Aquino, Ivan Czar Marquez, Gino Divino Cabual, Kevein Sicat, Maria Roselle Vicencio, Aeve John Alcantara, Christian Czar Marquez, Brent Leonard Alanan and Tristan Wayne Dandan.
Adjudged top U2000 performer in the Open section was Turqueza while top U1900 were So Kua, Lahoz, Cristobal and Olar. Other best category performers were Kwok (Intermediate), Macayan (Sr beginner); Cabual, Sicat and Vicencio (Jr Beginners); Carlo Ian Espino and Armand Narvaja (Prep 3 level); Angelo Ray Espino (Prep 2 level) and Deanne Cabual (Prep 1 level). Carlo Espino was also adjudged best preparatory scorer.
The trophies were donated by Awards Specialists.
