Adamson University’s young chess master had a very fruitful summer after hauling in a total of five medals in various competitions around the country.
Daryl Unix Samantila began his summer medal haul at the 2011 Palarong Pambansa and continued it at the Asian Youth Chess Championships held at Subic, Zambales. Samantila recently graduated from elementary and will be an incoming high school freshman this June.
Samantila’s foray in the elementary chess tournament of the Palarong Pambansa, which was held on May 9-13 at the Dipolog Convention Center in Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte, ended with three gold medals and the team championship in the elementary division. The young Falcon was impressive throughout seven rounds, where he was honored with a Best in Board 1 award for his earliest achievement. He was later on given the Excellence Award and the Most Oustanding Player award for scoring 6.5 out of seven match points, and for garnering the highest total number of points earned in every round without any loss. Samantila paired with Jhon Fleer Donguines, a fifth grader from St. Rose Academy in Pasig, to represent the National Capital Region and win the team championship.
A day after finishing his Dipolog stint, Samantila traveled to Subic, Zambales to participate in the Asian Youth Chess Championship held at the Ballroom of the Travelers Hotel from May 14-22. The tournament is conducted by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines under the auspices of the Asian Chess Federation. Youngsters aged 18 and below from 20 Asian countries participated in the event.
Team Philippines represented by Samantila, Haince Patrick de Leon, and Daniel John Lemi scored a bronze medal in the Team Open Under 12 event. Samantila made five points while de Leon and Lemi both scored 4.5. Another bronze medal would come by Samantila’s way, this time in the individual open under 12 event where he finished behind gold medalist Aravindh Chithambaram silver medalist Hetul Shah. Both winners are from India.
Samantila qualified for the Subic tournament by winning the Lingayen and Davao leg of the Philippine National Age Group Chess Championship held earlier this year. The event served as the qualifying contest for the Asian Youth Chess Championship, selecting the top two players from each age group.
With his wins in Subic, Samantila will now go on to compete in Terakan, Indonesia for another Asian chess fest in June. He will also join the Baby Falcons this year, seeking action in the juniors chess tournament of the UAAP.
