Barbosa rules AFPI chess tilt; Laylo, Paragua, Garma tie for 2nd

VETERAN IM Oliver Barbosa added another feather to his cap by winning the overall title in the 2011 AFPI rapid chess championships at the Philippine Army gym in Fort Bonifacio, Makati City.

Barbosa, one of the country’s most talented players seeking the elusive GM title this year, finished with eight points on eight wins and one loss to capture the title and the top prize of P20,000 in this two-day tournament organized by the Artillery Foundation of the Philippines, Inc. (AFPI) in cooperation with the Philippine Academy for Chess Excellence (PACE).

Barbosa also earned the right to represent the country in the coming Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) rapid chess competitions in Palembang, Indonesia in November.

Three players -- GM Darwin Laylo, GM Mark Paragua and IM Chito Garma – shared second to fourth places with 7.5 points.

Top seed GM Rogelio Antonio Jr. and Deniel Causo finished in a tie for fourth and fifth places with seven points.

Also making it to the Top 10 are IM Rolando Nolte, IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia, IM Barlo Nadera, Richelieu Salcedo and Ronald Llavanes.

Barbosa, who is best remembered for finishing second in the Moscow Open in Moscow, Russia last February, swept his first eight matches against Magellan Bagayna, John Ranel Morazo, Nelson Mariano III, Efren Bagamasbad, Sheider Nebato , Fernie Donguines, Nolte and Antonio.

With the title already assured, Barbosa lost to Paragua in the ninth and final round.

Laylo crushed Garcia, while Garma overwhelmed Senador to in a pair of crucial final-round matches to join Paragua in second to fourth places.

Antonio whipped Salcedo and Causo toppled Donguines to salvage fourth and fifth places.

In other decisive final-round matches, Nolte downed Areque, Nadera subdued IM Richard Bitoon, Ronald Llavanes nipped IM Ronald Dableo, Salcedo stopped Rustum Tolentino, Mari Joseph Turuqeza crushed Ali Branzuela and John Ranel Morazo shocked GM John Paul Gomez.

Sharing the limelight were Cherry Ann Mejia and Catherine Perena, who tied for first place in the women’s division; and Mark James Marcellana, who topped the kiddies 14 years old and under category.

Mejia subdued reigning national girls champion Janelle Mae Frayna, while Perena halved the point with Marie Antoinette San Diego to finish with identical scores of 7.5 points out of a possible nine.

Mejia, however, edged Perena in the Sonneborn-Berger tiebreak.

Rulp Ylem Jose outwitted Mikee Charlene Suede to clinch third place with seven points, while Jan Jodilyn Fronda defeated Cristine Rose Mariano for fourth place with 6.5 points.

The other top finishers are Suede, Cristy Lamiel Bernales and San Diego , all with 5.5 points; and Akiko Charmaine Suede, Mariano , Jenny Rose Palomo, Jedara Docena, Shania Mae Mendoza, Frayna, Lovelyn Medina, Angelina Mortos and Nikki Capinpin, all with five points.

In the kiddies division, Marcellana bowed to Dennis Gutierrez Jr. but still won by a full point over Daryl Unix Samantila, Giovanni Mejia and Gutierrez Jr.

Samantila drew with Alji Cantonjos and Mejia downed Julius Gonzales.

Finishing in fifth to eighth places with six points are Homel Aristotle Cunanan, John Jasper Laxamana, Anfernee Bonifacio and Cantonjos.
In all, a total of 234 players -- 118 men, 80 women and 36 kiddies – saw action in the tournament.

GM Jayson Gonzales served as the tournament director, while IA Gene Poliarco was the supervising arbiter. Ed Andaya.
