KUNMING CITY, Yunnan Province, China---Jerlyn Mae and Marie Antoinette San Diego of Dasmarinas, Cavite got off to a blazing start by posting victories in the opening round of the first edition of 2011 China-ASEAN junior chess classic competition here on Tuesday.
Jerlyn Mae defeated Xie Li Bei Lei of China after 54 moves of Sicilian Defense dragon variation using the advantageous white pieces in the girls 8 years old and under category while her older sister Marie Antoinette toppled Zhang Rang of China after 32 moves of Slav defense also with the white side in the girls 12 years old and under category.
Samantha Glo Revita of Rosales, Pangasinan, meantime settled a truce with Ye Qian Qian of China after 40 moves of Sicilian Pelikan employing the disadvantageous black pieces in the girls 12 years old and under category.
Jerlyn Mae and Marie Antoinette and Samantha Glo, who belonged to the "ASEAN" team following their strong showing in 12th ASEAN age-group chess competition held in Tarakan, Indonesia last June.
"“It’s a great start for the RP chess girl's team, hope mahawakan nila ang magandang momentum," said Asian Zone 3.3 President Honorable Abraham "Bambol" N. Tolentino Jr. , who is also the Secretary-General of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) headed by it's Chairman/President Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr.
Ronald Canino of Cagayan de Oro City shocked Dai Wen Zhi of China after 60 moves of French defense with the black pieces to take charge in the open 10 years old and under division. However team mate Julius Gonzales of Marikina City was yielded to Ma Lin after 32 moves of Sicilian o kelly with the black side.
In the Open 8 years old and under, Dennis Gutierrez III of Bulacan/Pangasinan split the point with Xu Yin La of China after 46 moves of Sicilian kan while Daryl Unix Samantila of Tonsuya, Malabon lost to Wang Yu Kun of China after 43 moves of French skirmish in the open 12 years old and under.
Canino, Gonzales, Gutierrez and Samantila also playing for the "ASEAN" team.
Over-all, China leading the way in the open 8, 10 and 12 years old and under for the team event by beating "ASEAN" team, 3-1.
In the distaff side, China settled a truce (2-2) in the girls 8 and 12 under, respectively but blasted "ASEAN" team in the girls 10 and under, 4-0.
The Filipino woodpushers China chess campaign is backed up by the NCFP, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) thru it's chairman Ricardo Garcia and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC).
Other chess supporter are Malabon City Lone District Congresswoman Jaye Lacson-Noel, Adamson University President Fr. Gregg L. BaƱaga and Chess Coach Christopher Rodriguez.
The China-ASEAN Youth Chess Classic Tournament 2011 is jointly organized by Kunming Sports Development, Kunming Chess Association and Jinma Chess Club under the auspices of ASEAN Chess Confederation and Chinese Chess Association.
