2 Pinoy kids remain unscathed in Indonesia chessfest

MANILA, Philippines - Marie Antoinette San Diego and Daryl Unix Samantila remained unscathed after three rounds to keep the lead in the boys and girls’ 12-under category of the 12th ASEAN Age-group Standard Chess Championships in Tarakan, Indonesia.

Samantila, 12, nipped Hoang Tan Duc of Vietnam to share the lead with Nguyen Tan Hoang of Vietnam and Arif Abdul Hafiz of Indonesia. The youngster from Malabon defeated Indonesians M. Ichsan and Eliezer Neovand in the first two rounds.

San Diego, who bagged a gold and a silver in the ASEAN Primary Schools Sports Olympiad in Jakarta last year, blasted local bet Hazimi Nuryamsina to jack up her score to 3.0 points.

San Diego, an Asian Youth bronze medalist, shared the top of the table with Vindu Chandra of Indonesia, who stopped Samanta Glo Revita, also a Filipina, from booking her third straight victory.

Jean Karen Enriquez, Janelle Mae Frayna and  Cherry Ann Mejia also prevailed in the girls’ 16-under—Enriquez over Woman Fide Master Nguyen TranNgoc of Vietnam, Frayna over Lintang Wulandari of Indonesia and Mejia over Rida Mutiani of Indonesia.

Mari Joseph Turqueza, the national juniors champion, nipped Fide Master (FM) Dang Hoang Son of Vietnam. Lennon Hart Salgados drew with Ishak Lili of Indonesia in the boys 20-under also in the third round, while Richelieu Salcedo yielded to FM Nguyen Van Hai of Vietnam.

In girls 20-under action, Rowelyn Acedo drew with Citra Dewi of Indonesia, and Jedara Docena lost to Woman International Master Hoang Thi Nuh of Vietnam.

In boys’ 16-under hostilities, Dave Patrick Dulay beat Vu Quang Quyen of Vietnam, McDominique Lagula drew with Rido Priambodo of Indonesia, Kline Surposa also drew with Rahmat Sangun of Indonesia and Paul Robert Evangelista lost to Riswan Fahroni of  Indonesia.

Jerad Docena downed Dery Pranoto of Indonesia, Austin Jacob Literatus bowed to  Aloysisus Cheng of Malaysia and Giovanni Mejia lost to Jodi Setyaki of  Indonesia in the boys 14-under.

Ronald Canino beat Kemas Suri of Indonesia in the boys 8-under, while Irish Yngayo subdued Ngo Thu Giang of Vietnam while Mary Sol Quitong downed compatriot Jerlyn Mae San Diego in the girls 8-under.
