Chess: Samantila, Revita, San Diego victors in Tarakan ASEAN Age-group tourney

MANILA, June 13 — Daryl Unix Samantila, Samantha Glo Revita and Marie Antoinette San Diego beat their respective opponents at the start of the 12th ASEAN + age-group chess championships at the Indoor Telaga Kramat Stadium in Tarakan, Indonesia Monday.


Samantila, the pride of Tongsuya, Malabon defeated M Ichsan of Indonesia (Boys 12 and under), Revita from Rosales, Pangasinan subdued Dewi Fortuna of Indonesia (Girls 12 and under) and San Diego from Dasmarinas, Cavite drubbed Febby Unita Novitasari Manuru of Indonesia (Girls 12 and under).
However, most of the Filipinos in different age categories drew their matches.

Julius Gonzales split the point with Dennis Gutierrez Jr. in the Boys' 10-under, Haince Patrick de Leon and Tristan Frech Ibaoc agreed to a draw in the Boys' 12 and- under.

Austin Jacob Literatus and Giovanni Mejia also drew matches in the Boys' 14 and-under while. The same thing happened between between Mc Dominique Lagula and Jeazzir Kline Surposa, Patrick Dave Dulay and Paul Robert Evangelista in the Boys' 16 and -under.

Richilieu Salcedo halved the point with Lennon Heart Salgados in the Boys' 20 and -under.

In the Girls' division, Mary Sol Quitong settled for a truce with Irish Yngayo (u-8), Jerlyn Mae San Diego bowed to Jia Tien Chua of Malaysia (u-8), Jesca Docena drew with Lorraine Yngayo (u-10), Mira Mirano halved the point with Shania Mae Mendoza (u-14), Janelle Mae Frayna settled a truce with WFM Cherry Ann Mejia (u-16) and WNM Jedara Docena drew with Mary Israel Palero (u-20).

The performance of the RP youth players in this tournament are being closely monitored by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) headed by its chairman/ president Prospero "Butch" Pichay Jr. as well as the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) who bankrolled this trip.

National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) executive director Olympian GM Jayson Gonzales is the delegation head and assisted by two coaches NM Wilfredo Neri and James Infiesto. (PNA)
